It was wonderful to hear on the news this week of the engagement between HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, there is nothing like a good love affair to warm the heart. Watching them on the TV was stunning, with the way they spoke to and of one another, touched and looked at each other. The warmth of their affection transmitted itself across the airwaves. This engagement is a promise given privately, shared with family and then with the world and its media. In the Spring further promises and vows will be exchanged, in front of God and the world.
Do you realise that someone else is in love with you and has made many promises just for you?
It is true, God has done just this.
We notice that Prince Harry and Meghan have only eyes for one another, in the same way God only eyes for you. As the psalmist recorded in Psalm 17 – You are the apple of His eye; and Zechariah confirmed that as the Apple of God’s eye, anyone who harms you harms His most precious possession.
God gives many promises, directly and also recorded in the Bible. Do you have a favourite one? The scholars tell us that over 55,000 promises have been written down. Often they are broken down into categories such as 1,035 about God and his faithfulness to us, 2,366 promises concerning Christ Jesus, 3,040 about Holy Spirit, 6,652 about forgiveness, 8,020 about faith and 6,700 about peace. I could continue but I think you get the idea! So it means we can claim any or all of them!
If this is a little overwhelming, look at a section. Here is a smaller selection, a mere 54 promises put together by Rootbeerdan (I just loved his blog name!) Choose one of two of these to start with and own them deep into your heart. Repeat them often, out loud whenever you can.
Imagine living your life according to the promises which God has given,
Jesus has actioned and Holy Spirit continually reminds.
I actually believe that the whole Bible is one whole promise, filled with promises that have been fulfilled, personal promises for God’s favoured people, promises of the present for each one of us to claim and future promises of the return of Jesus and a new Heaven.
God’s love for you and I, permeate these promises and can never fade or fail. They may appear invisible, but when claimed the light of God can shine from an individual, and they too can attract people purely by this love coming through them. His love then becomes transparent and obvious to others. Can you think of people who are like this? Are you like this? Do you want to be?
It is about letting Holy Spirit do His work of reminding you of God’s promises and which resonate the most to you. Go ahead, have a look at some of them. Here is a list to help you, and I am convinced that they are just a fraction of what God really has in store as His plans to prosper you and guide you.
My favourite promise is: “As God is for me, who can be against me?” and I can claim these particularly when I feel afraid, lacking trust in others or paranoid! What is your favourite? Share it with me. If you are having difficulty accepting even one of the 55K listed, then contact me and I will pray for you, for His promise for your life to become obvious to you and that the invisible pull of God’s love becomes apparent in your life. Today, I can claim God’s promise for your life that ‘He will never forsake you, leave you or abandon you, but is forever nearby.’
If you need more uplifting, read Psalm 42:1 and listen to it set to music by Marty Nystrom. Notice the words as we sing about God being the apple of our eye! You see the best love is one where it is mutual, both responding and growing in the love for one another. You with God and God with You.
So it is with respect and honour that I wish HRH Prince Henry (Harry) and his fiancée Meghan Merkle much happiness and strength as they proceed with their engagement. I look forward to joining with them (via the TV) in the celebrations of their wedding day and pray for their healthy, happy and harmonious marriage with God at its centre.
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Come close to God, and God will come close to you.
