- Have you considered how you grow older?
- Do you want to grow older gracefully or disgracefully?
The clock is ticking but at what age do you realise that the one year older has made the difference? In teenage terms this is marked when the clock strikes midnight on the eve of the thirteenth birthday, overnight that fun twelve year old metaphors into a teen. Wonderfully, depicted in the Kevin and Perry Series, the young boy who was filled with questions now responds to all efforts of communication with a grunt and a shrug, the young girl who had happily skipped and played hopscotch now flounces and says, “whatever” with great regularity. Luckily it only lasts a few years and the turning point into adulthood and friendship with parents emerges.
What are the major turning points after this, for Bridget Jones it started in her early 30’s, perhaps for you it was the realization that you had to get a job and earn a living with all the responsibilities. The Middle years are interesting when you suddenly wake up and realise that policemen, traffic wardens and shop assistance all look like 12 year olds!
I love it when age culture gets pushed back, 60 is the new 40 etc. As I move nearer to 60 than 50 odd things begin to happen, it seems that I can go from one room to another and not remember what I went in there for. The times, I walk from the kitchen to the bedroom and then wonder why I did this? The items that go missing are glasses and gardening gloves and other every day essentials. I’ve taken to buying a dozen gloves at a time and then they can be left wherever and I can find another pair easily without resorting to tramping to every corner of the garden or green house to find them!
Denis doesn’t seem to have this problem but then he is a year younger than me! Although he can be occasionally caught practicing his ‘Grumpy old man syndrome’, so perhaps the magic age is 56!
They say that Age is just a number – what do you think? There is much written on ageing and my favourites are Shakespeare’s Seven Ages of Man and Jenny Joseph’s When I am an old woman I will wear purple and a red hat. The latter certainly gives tips on how to age disgracefully!
What does God say about the passage of time and aging? He certainly had a lot of experience of it with the number of people in the Bible who lived to ages of 500 years and more. I wonder if Noah thought about his great grandfathers and wondered if he could match them in reaching the same age – he nearly made it! I’ve put together a table showing some ages of some prominent people in the Bible for you.
But they say that Age is just a number, so let look at ages which feature in the Bible
Have you noticed that elderly people always tell you their age? It seems like a fact, which gives enormous pride to its owner. Interestingly, Sarah is the only female whose age is recorded in the Bible – perhaps this is why they say you should never reveal a woman’s age!
Living longer, having longevity and even immortality is often in the scientist minds and even fiction writers – who can forget the action fantasy film Highlander? It produced the wonderful title song by Queen, Who wants to Live Forever?
How old is God?
I guess this brings me to thinking about God, about immortality and Jesus who came to give us eternal life. There’s something to ponder on, when you have a moment!
Well, as to the age of God, some have tried to pinpoint this with calculations based on the age of earth, the universe amongst other things, but the real answer is that God has no age at all!
God, our creator, cannot be measure in time or space, as He cannot be constrained by time. He is ‘outside’ such elements and definitions. As the Apostle Peter reminded us. “But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.” 2 Peter 3:8 (NLT)
The main thing is that God loves us, regardless of our age, and still expects great things from us, even into old age. As the Psalmist said, “Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.“ Psalm 92:14 (NLT)
So where are you in this great ageing dilemma? Gracefully or disgracefully getting older? Watch the video and see if this helps you to decide! But for now I might take to wearing more purple and definitely a red hat!
I will be your God throughout your lifetime
– until your hair is white with age.
I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.
Isaiah 46:4 (NLT)
